I'm not even sure there are still people who read blogs. Are there? Is anyone out there? Helloooooo?

For those who ARE still out there and reading this, I thought I'd give a bit of a run down on what's been happening in my creative world of late. Unfortunately, I've been sworn to secrecy for some projects, so I can't go into too much detail.

Quite a it has been happening actually. The project I've been working on for the past 6 months (yes, the one involving Neil Gaiman) is getting closer to completion. There's still a bit to do, but the end is in sight. That's about all I'm allowed to say about that one!

I'm working on a couple of book covers at the moment, too. One is for Orion Books in London. It's called 'The Grindle Witch' and I'm having a lot of fun with this one. The roughs have just been approved, so I will be onto furious painting now! I'm very happy with the look of the rough, but the real happiness doesn't come until the finishing stages of painting. I can't show anything for that one either at this stage. HAHA!

What I CAN show is a poster I completed for Melbourne's House of Burlesque. They're putting on a live show for the Fringe Festival called 'Pandora's Dolls', and it sounds awesome!

Oh! I'm forgetting the best news of all! Hire an Illustrator, and Little Chimp Society are putting together a show and book of 100 quality illustrator's work, and one of my pieces was chosen out of 1440 others. Hooray! My 'Reaper' will gracing the walls of The Framers Gallery in London next April:

Here's hoping I'll make it to London next year for opening!

So, that's what's happening in my world at the moment, along with some other bits and pieces I'll talk about once they're in full swing.

Thanks for reading! Bye! :)
It's been a while since my last post.

Unfortunately, I haven't had much that I've been able to talk about. I've been working on some top secret projects for clients lately. Hopefully there won't be much longer until I can reveal these new works.

In the meantime, I've had a little bit of time in between client crits to work on some studies. I've also started teaching myself how to use Corel Painter. I've had Painter 11 sitting in my dock for years now with the intentions of learning it 'one day'. With the release of Painter X3 I thought I'd upgrade and sink my teeth into it.

So far I'm finding the program to be great. I love the range of 'traditional' media and the look that it gives my work. I feel like I'm going back to the time when I was only using traditional media, but it's digital! It's a great combination of a traditional media look, but without the mess. And that's one of the things that I didn't like about using traditional- I loved the look, but hated the mess... and the amount of time it took to mix the colour I wanted, not to mention the waste of paint when I couldn't get the colour 100% correct.

The only bad thing I could say about Painter is sometimes it's a little laggy when using big brushes. It's a lot a fast than Painter 11 though, I must say! Although I don't think I will ever give up on Photoshop completely, Painter has definitely become my tool of choice.

So, here's my first attempt at using Painter. A colour study using digital oil paints- photo ref by ioulex.com (with some differences).
With 2012 coming to an end, it's time to start planning for the new year ahead. 2013 brings a brand new class of teaching the new NMIT students digital painting. I'm really excited about teaching this new class, and have started furiously designing lesson plans.

Above is an example of one of the projects I'm thinking about setting my new students: black and white portraits from a photograph using custom brushes. This example is painted from a photograph taken by professional photographer Lee Jeffries (http://leejeffries.500px.com/). I've used custom oil painting brushes.

I really enjoyed doing this painting, and I'm hoping that my new students will too!Jodee Taylahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04002071122159126791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6835335150508229762.post-20125505062721642152012-10-04T21:06:00.000+10:002012-10-04T21:07:28.250+10:00'Lady With a Mask' speed painting...

In under a week's time I will be unveiling two new pieces as part of this awesome show in Melbourne. I've been working very hard, and am very happy how these works have finished up. If all goes to plan, I'll also have some copies of Children of the In-between up for sale on opening night!

Centred around the theme of monsters, creatures and all things creepy, this show is going to showcase work from 25 Melbourne illustrators... and it's going to be awesome!

Creature Feature will run from September 3rd - September 17.
Opening night will be September 6 from 6 - 9pm, possibly with some form of monstrous entertainment and stuff for sale.
This is a great resource!

'My Perfect Pitch' is run by author Brian Grove, who has spent, what seems like, many hours compiling an insane database of publishers. And, these are publishers who are CURRENTLY accepting submissions, and covers all genres. The site doesn't contain any self-publishing or vanity companies, and is a genuinely FREE resource.

There is also a heap of information about the writing process and how to go about getting your book published. Brian has put so much work into this site to share his expertise with US! So, thank you, Brian. :)
My followers will remember this design from a previous post. This way a character I created for Kitten D'Amour's stocking boxes. They're a great team to work for and their clothing designs are superb. Check them out! http://kittendamour.com. They are yet to open a boutique in Melbourne yet, but hopefully it shouldn't be too far away. :)Jodee Taylahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04002071122159126791noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6835335150508229762.post-21983951209401935082012-07-06T13:03:00.000+10:002012-07-06T13:03:47.263+10:00Painting study...

This is a little painting I did for digital painting practice- a tone and colour study. I was really interested in this because of the unusual hair style. I'd like to try some more unusual hair in the future. It was very good practice!

Here is a piece I just completed for a great environmental organisation in Tasmania named 'The Bookend Trust'.

This is the first piece in a series of six unusual and mysterious landscapes. The brief was to combine two different landscapes into one image, which has been challenging to say the least! I tried a lot of different approaches, but found this one to be the answer- looking through one landscape into another. I think it works quite well!

I'll post some more from this series as I complete them. No doubt that this image will change slightly later on when all pieces are lined up together.

I have some really cool projects happening at the moment, so more work is to come!Jodee Taylahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04002071122159126791noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6835335150508229762.post-4653102753705360252012-01-26T16:59:00.000+11:002012-01-26T16:59:15.365+11:00She is Thorne...I've been slaving over this piece for the past few weeks, leaving it for a few days then coming back to it.

Thorne is a character I've had rolling around in my head for just over a year now. Some may remember some early sketches of her. She's definitely come a long way since then! She belongs in either a full length novel or a graphic novel of some kind. There is definitely a story brewing, but I won't know where it's heading until I start to write it.

I don't know much about Thorne, but she's a guardian of some kind in an urban gothic setting. I've got ideas for possibly a modern gothic type Heaven. Thorne could be an angel of some kind; a bad-ass gothic angel with hot pink guns (those who have read 'Children of the In-between' know that I have a fascination with the after-life). She will also have a team just as bad-ass. I know that Thorne will be introduced into this team, not the other way around. The team will be rogues of some kind.... many ideas rolling around!

Stay tuned for more characters as my story progresses!
I based her on a character from the book 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' by Ransom Riggs (Quirk Books). Those avid followers of my blog will remember a previous post I wrote about this book.

In the book Emma looks 17, but is closer to 75. Emma can create fire and contain it in her hands. As you can see, I chose to depict her here as a little girl. I just thought she'd look a whole lot creepier, and she does!

This was an interesting exercise for me illustrating Emma as a child. I think this gives the character more depth and gives us a better understanding of her backstory as a 'peculiar child'. I'm going to create 17-year-old Emma very soon. This will be something I've never tried before- the same character at different ages. I'll be very interested to see how this next Emma turns out.

As well as Emma, I plan to do some more pieces based on characters from Ransom Riggs' book. Stay tuned!

This is a piece I started in the Imaginism House in October. I've been working on it, and procrastinating over it, since then. That tells me that I've spent way too long on one piece. I should have had six out since then! Soldiering on though...

At this stage I'm going to call it complete, but I know I'll want to come back to it in about a month's time with fresh eyes.

She has the creep-factor, which is what I was after, with her lovely soulless orb eyes and freaky lighting.
I've achieved a few things since I've been home, including a lovely sunburn!

All the things I learned from the workshop are constantly shouting at me from inside my head, but alas, I have to get some things out of the way before I start on my new, fresher, kick-ass portfolio. Some of these things I have to get done are pretty damn cool, but some are... underwhelming.

One of the cool things I'm working on at the moment is a collaboration with Sydney writer Damian Madden. This will be a short film for Tropfest 2012. Progress is still at first sketches stage, but I'm pretty confident it's going to be pretty awesome when finished and on the bigscreen. I can't say much about it at this stage, but it will include a bad-ass killer carrot. I'll post some more info about it when I can. :)

Cover for Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar
Children by Ransom Riggs

I've been researching and collecting inspiration for my new portfolio. I've taken Bobby Chiu's advice and have started researching films that are at concept stages, which will become the inspiration for my new pieces of work. And there are a lot of really cool films rumoured to be happening over the next few years! One of these is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. This is a book I purchased while at WorldCon in Reno in September. It jumped out at me from it's very crowded spot among the rest of the novels, on one of the many tables of the many vendors selling books there. I was surprised that this book seemed to levitate off the table in front of me (which is fitting since the cover shows a levitating girl). As soon as I read the blurb on the back I was hooked, not to mention it's published by Quirk Books who have some titles I'm very attracted to!

'A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs.'

So this great book is going to be a film, and, here's the best part, there's word that Tim Burton is going to take it on. Oh man, what a great combination! Those familiar with my style of work will know that drawing creepy kids is one of my specialities. So, really, there is no question about it, I MUST work on this film adaption! I was born to create art for this film, I believe it whole-heartedly.

So here's where the real work begins! I know the book, the story and the characters well, so it's a great project to start my new portfolio with. I can't wait to get started!
Well, I hate to say it, but the Imaginism In-House Workshop is at an end; 30 days of great education, inspiring stories, great advice, awesome meetings and huge laughing fits.

So what have I learned? There is so much, but I will do my best to list as many things as possible:

Much better drawing structure
Lighting and why it does what it does
Boxes are artistic GOLD!
Techniques with colour
Subtleties and how they absolutely make my work
T-burgers are the best things ever!
Poses and bringing out a subject's inner character
New techniques with acrylic paints
The crew from Imaginism Studios are actual humans and not some freaky drawing machines (and they're actually quite hilarious)
How to make myself an indispensable artist and my work more 'special'
Alvin Lee is awesome
A better way to draw hands!
How to draw people on the subway without them knowing you're drawing them
Using texture and brushes to take my work to the next level
Living with so many boys isn't so bad
Not to leave my sketchbook open while Augusto is around
Belief in myself and having the right attitude
The actual Imaginism Studios is not what I expected it to look like
Attracting the big clients and how to keep them coming back
Vanilla tea is yummy!

Ok, so I can't list absolutely everything that I've learned over the past 30 days, but let me just say- it's a lot! I really didn't think that much would fit in my head, but my work has transformed dramatically. It's only up from here!

On departing the Imaginism House I'd like to say a huge THANK YOU to the entire Imaginism crew for making this workshop the best thing I've ever experienced. In particular, Thierry and Bobby for passing on their precious knowledge openly in their lessons. Thank you to Isa for being my 'girly relief' from living with so many boys :). And thank you to the other workshoppers for being such a cool group. Augusto - thanks for TeePee! HAHA!

So, tomorrow I'll be hopping on another few planes, and 20 hours later I should be back in Australia. I'll have a new career outlook, new direction, stronger skill, and fresh inspiration, and I'll be heading straight for the studio!

Watch out for a new portfolio in the very near future. :)

I can't believe it's gone so fast, but I can't believe the amount of knowledge I've crammed in over just a month.

The last few days have been awesomely fun! With Halloween tomorrow the workshoppers and the Imaginism Studios crew all sat around the dinner table yesterday and carved pumpkins! This is my first ever pumpkin carving, because Australians haven't fully embraced Halloween. Once I got over the whole gagging thing while ripping out its guts I had a great time. HAHA! Lots of laughs were had while carving pumpkins. We've set them up out the front of the Imaginism House, so I will post some more photos when they're all aglow with life. :)

(My costume hasn't turned up yet, so I have my fingers crossed it will show up tomorrow. I'll be sad if it doesn't :( )
Day 25Acrylic painting lessons this week in the Imaginism House. Although I work with acrylics a fair bit at home, I'm learning new techniques. These new techniques will take my acrylic work to the next level I think! Along with the new things I've been learning about light and colour... my arsenal is growiinnngggg. :)

Day 22We're now in our last week of the Imaginism Workshop, but that's plenty of time to fit in a whole heap more knowledge and dinners with the Imaginism crew. :)

Last night we were fortunate enough to attend the Artist Master Class Workshop with Bobby Chiu in Downtown Toronto. It was an amazing night! Bobby is such an inspiration I could listen to him talk all day. The information he was giving us at the workshop was invaluable, and the skills he has given me will greatly influence my art and career. It already has! His ability to tell a story kept me well and truly at attention, and the metaphors he used to explain certain situations relevant to the arts industry, success and career, will stick with me forever. His teaching technique is definitely unique.

With a combination of the knowledge being passed on by Thierry, Bobby, Kei and the rest of the Imaginism crew, I'll have a fully stocked arsenal by the end of the 30 days.

Last night finished off with a late night dinner in China Town with the entire Imaginism Studios crew. I feel I'm getting too used to this. We're very spoiled here at the Imaginism House!

Now for some more art ability progress! I've posted the finished Pirate Elf character design painting, which was an absolute great learning experience for me. The more Thierry picks my stuff apart, the better I'll be, so I love it when he finds even the tiniest things I could improve!

I've also posted a lovely pink sphere. Yes, it's only a sphere, but it has taught me so much about light and colour. Amazing!

This one is not quite perfect, but I plan on practicing spheres for a long time to come.

We're learning techniques in acrylics all this week, so stay tuned for some very cool stuff. All I'll say is - Meat Boy. ;)
Day 21Ok, so, someone is speeding up the time, because this amount of time going as fast as it is is not normal! Honestly, it feels like I've only been in the Imaginism House for a week, because time has gone by so quickly, but at the same time we've learned so much it feels like we've been here for months. Strange!

So, all this week we've been learning digital painting techniques from Thierry and Bobby. Amazing, amazing stuff. I'm trying to soak up every teeny bit of information they throw at me, because every tiny subtlety they're showing me is GOLD!

This is a piece done yesterday. She's a pirate elf created with a Pixar flavour. I'll post a picture when she's done. :) (I now want a Cintiq!)
Day 18Well there is so much that I have experienced and learned since my last post. I really didn't think it was possible to learn so much in this short amount of time, but it looks like it is!

For your viewing pleasure today I've included a digital painting I like to call 'Apple Boy', and a snap shot of the Workshoppers with the Imaginism Studios crew. That was a great night at a Brazillian restaurant (we've been there twice now), talking art, taking silly photos, and eating ourselves to the extent of popped jeans.

Working hard and socialising with some greatly talented and inspiring artists. This is the Imaginism Workshop.
Day 16It's digital painting week here at the Imaginism Workshop House. Hooray!

I thought I'd reveal the giant improvement in quality and speed of my work so far. These are paintings of the same apples in grey tones. We were given a time limit of half an hour to complete each painting, and as you can see, the improvement from one apple to the other is quite significant.

In one day I've learnt how to speed up my painting while still retaining quality...well even better quality. Judge for yourself...
Day 15? Seriously, where are the days going? This is whizzing past, and I don't like the speed in which it's travelling.

I had yet another great day yesterday. We had another Subway Sketching session, which is always interesting. Who knew that drawing total strangers sitting around could be so fun? I must say though, I don't like it when they catch me drawing them. As soon as they become 'aware' of what I'm doing their whole demeanor changes and their 'inner character' disappears. Yesterday, for instance, a dude stuck his head behind his newspaper grumbling something about 'invading his privacy'. If you're in a public place we can draw you all we want, dude!

Other than the coffee that someone spilt on the train floor, and the loud-speaker announcements that we weren't meant to hear, it was a pretty successful session. Subway Sketching is a great exercise. I'm finding that it's giving me a better sense of the human form and drawing more natural positions - my drawings aren't as 'stiff'. I'm still exercising the method of finding the essence of the character, but it's definitely coming through clearer than it was before.

After Subway Sketching we made a visit to Labyrinth Books - very cool place. This place has MAD art books, and most I've never seen on Australian shelves. I'm a lover of 'The Art of...' books, and this place is full of them! I found a couple of bargains hidden away in a dark corner of a shelf - two audio books by Neil Gaiman. Jackpot! It pays to think differently when searching for bargains- 'Now, if I was a Neil Gaiman audio book that has been in this store for ever, where would I be?'

Finished off the day with burgers and olive bread from Cobbs. T always buys them out of it. He actually reserved all their olive bread beforehand. HAHA!

I can't believe we're at the end of the second week already! The workshop is going way too fast. But, you know what they say - time flies when you're having fun. And that's what I'm experiencing- a whole heap of creatively challenging, brain-bending, inspiring fun. There is so much new knowledge in my head I think I may explode. :D

My drawing style is much stronger with better structure, although I still have a lot of practice to do. I can't even count how many heads I've drawn over the past 2 weeks. It's definitely into triple digits by now, and I'm definite there are many more to come. Thierry is brutal with the heads! HA!

You know when you go to bed at night and it feels like you close your eyes for just a second, and then your alarm goes off? That's what it's like here. You're so exhausted that you wake up in the same position you went to sleep in. Imagine day long sessions of cardio and weight training, but for your mind. That's what the Imaginism Workshop is all about. Ahhhh sweet creative brain bendingggg. It has become addictive.

I'm looking at everything around me so differently now, and seeing
things so totally different to what I was before I started this
workshop. It's amazing! My creative brain is in the process of having a
total renovation. My bare, grey walls are being painted a hardcore shade
of red, and I'm loving myself sick here!
When they say 'intense' THEY MEAN IT! But it's definitely a great feeling of intensity. I feel exhausted at the end of each day after lessons from Thierry, projects, and nightly homework, and according to Bobby that means we're doing well!

I definitely feel my drawing and rendering skills are getting much stronger. I've learnt so many things that I'm confident are going to catapult my career into a much better place. My ultimated career goals are feeling more attainable, and I'm only at day 9 of the workshop. I don't want this workshop to end, but I'm dying to see what my work will become at the end of the 30 days.

As well as strengthening my artistic skill I'm getting inspiration and tips of how to really pinpoint where I want to be with my career, and see my direction more clearly. When I get back I'm seeing a whole new portfolio in the works, and a more defined sense of what needs to be done.

Who knew there was so much to drawing a cube?!
